Ljubicic Clinches Win in Masters Cup Debut

Ljubicic managed 25 winners.
By Bill Scott
The sensation of the late-season,
Ivan Ljubicic, joined Roger Federer in sending a second Argentine to defeat with his
6-2, 6-3 decision over Guillermo Coria.
Ljubicic, winner of indoor titles over the past month in Metz
and Vienna as well as a finalist in both the Masters Series Madrid
(lost to Rafael Nadal) and last week's Masters Series Paris (lost
to Tomas Berdych), earned in place in Shanghai thanks to his autumn
efforts.
The Croatian struck 11 aces and broke Coria on four of nine
occasions; he managed 25 winners.
He also moved closer to passing 2005 ace leader Andy Roddick
as he improved his season total to 887 with the injured American
sitting on 912.
Ljubicic improved his ATP-best indoor record to 34-6 during
2005.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Exclusive Audio | Press Transcripts
Ivan Ljubicic: (On his group) "I mean, it's really tough group. I mean, obviously, and playing first match
against Coria, it's a lot of pressure because it's absolutely must-win situation. But, you know, I played that
situation kind of in last four weeks. I had to win every single match to have a chance to qualify for the Masters
Cup. I did. So it was kind of comfortable because I'm used to these kind of situations. I think I play great match
really. Especially in the first set, everything went my way."
(On playing Federer next) "Well, I don't think it's going to be key match of the group, so I can play relaxed
really. I don't think it's an advantage for me that I played so many matches against him because he's going to
be really careful how to face this match because he knows that I can give him some trouble. So obviously I
have a feeling it's going to depend on him. If he plays his best tennis, it's not much I can do or anyone else. But
I'm confident. I'm playing well. I think I can give him some headaches, so I'm going to try that on Tuesday."
Guillermo Coria: (On Ljubicic's performance) "He played an unbelievable match and he served unbelievably well. He just played better the whole match.
(On playing Nalbandian) "Well, definitely he's the favorite. He plays much better on this surface right now. I don't see myself on this surface winning the match. It's too difficult. The only thing I've got now is to enjoy the tournament because it's a fantastic tournament. That's the only thing I have left here, is to enjoy."
